Blinky is the seriocomic brainchild of artist Jeffrey Vallance, who has taken the concept and processes of documentation to their most absurd conclusion. 2008 marks the thirty-year anniversary of Jeffrey Vallances Blinky project. In celebration of this historic event, Vallance has released The Special 30th Anniversary Edition of the publication, Blinky the Friendly Hen (Smart Art Press; Santa Monica, 2008) in conjunction with a life-size Blinky Chapel complete with roof and steeple at Track 16 Gallery. The original Blinky (1978) was a piece of meat (chicken) Vallance purchased at a local supermarket. What followed was a trip to the Los Angeles Pet Cemetery to see if they would bury a piece of meatthey did, and held a subsequent burial ritual for a dead pet, all documented by Vallance. Vallances straightforward narrative and simple black-and-white photos offer a striking commentary on our society, our treatment of animals, and death. It is a culture shaped by the domination of empire in its various guises in history as well as the creative struggles against empire which generated a lively makeshift strategy of resisting exhaustion. Bose thought of himself as a drifter whose oeuvre and life made up a diary full of incident, diverse engagement, and the incessant search for the weapons of the weak. The artist's gear largely consisted of mixed-media, installation, and performance art projects that cut up and suture, mix and remix, photocopy and juxtapose, steal and replace found objects, pictures from the archives, garden statues, animist imagery, and even the traces of the sun's rays which pierce marks into his works. Though he often crossed borders, Bose found his center in Baguio, a mountain city in northern Philippines which was an American hill station in the early twentieth century. Surrounded by the living traditions of indigenous peoples, faced with the encroachments of globalization, and taking on the role of a gregarious firebrand of local artists, Bose--hunting and gathering, slashing and burning in economies that subsist on performative parodies--nurtured an agile and ludic imagination committed to the imperative of change and its highly hybrid, fantastic, and resolute dispositions."

– Patrick Flores

White Wine Press is a series of texts, one hundred being the goal, as an open project that seeks to wander a world. Henderson takes on what may be the biggest issue of our crisis-laden times; human folly in the face of extinction. Henderson’s emotive drawings show man bumbling through the world, tripping and fumbling, as the litany of crises mount. Some are trapped, as Narcissus was, stupidly gazing at their own reflections. Others are more literally blinded by the bags they wear over their heads. They stand no chance of even knowing what telltale signs of doom they are missing; sitting ducks. Artemis of Ephesus, a mother goddess and protector of pregnant women, makes an appearance in two drawings. Henderson never really points the finger in her work. For decades, Linn has drawn inspiration from neolithic proto cities located in modern-day Southern Turkey, a society whose burial practices involved entombing the bones of deceased community members below the beds of the living, which suggests that there was no separation between life and death. In addition, evidence shows that men and women were equally treated. This exhibition builds on these ideas yet goes in a more personal direction. Because of the enforced isolation of the past year, instead of reaching outward to use distant societies as inspiration for her work, Linn turned inward, thinking about the relationship between life and death within her own cultural upbringing. The work follows Linn’s larger life-long mission of intermingling art and life and creating a seamless combination of the two.

Contributions by Anuradha Vikram (essay), Nicki Green (a conversation with the artist), and Amanda Maciel Antunes (poem).

Published January 2021
108 pages
Softcover
11.7 x 8.3 inches

Brand new.

ISBN 978-1889195-63-6

After 30 years of friendship and collaboration, Don Ed Hardy and Laurie Steelink exhibit together for the first time in "Evidence of Things Unseen" at Track 16 Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work is also currently included in the California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art.
