Bob Flanagan: The Pain Journal
Los Angeles writer and artist Bob Flanagan created performances with partner Sheree Rose which shocked and inspired audiences from Seattle to Boston to Berlin. He combined text, video, and live performance to create a highly personal but universal exploration of childhood, sex, illness, and mortality. The Pain Journal, Flanagans last complete work, is an extraordinary chronicle of the last year of his life before his death from cystic fibrosis at the age of forty-three. Whereas Flanagans notorious book The Fuck Journal (Hanuman Press, 1994) celebrated the erotics of pain, The Pain Journal is a close-up view of his ragged coexistence with the inescapable, intimate pain of his own disease.
