White Wine Press No. 11

Richard Deacon, the English sculptor, documents through correspondence an notebooks moments that have been significant for him on his own journey as an artist, epecially his meeting with Judd‰۪s work.

In English and in Spanish. The book can be turned upside down and read in the reverse direction for the two different versions.

Richard Deacon was born in Bangor, Wales and educated at Plymouth College. He then studied at the Somerset College of Art, Taunton, St Martin's School of Art, London and the Royal College of Art, also in London. He left the Royal College in 1977, and went on to study part-time at the Chelsea School of Art. Deacon's first one-person show came in 1978 in Brixton. Deacon's work is abstract, but often alludes to anatomical functions. His works are often constructed from everyday materials such as laminated plywood, and he calls himself a "fabricator" rather than a "sculptor". His early pieces are typically made up of sleek curved forms, with later works sometimes more bulky.

Deacon's body of work includes small-scale works suitable for showing in art galleries, as well as much larger pieces shown in sculpture gardens and objects made for specific events, such as dance performances. He won the Turner Prize in 1987 (nominated for his touring show For Those Who Have Eyes) having previously been nominated in 1984. He was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1999 New Year Honours List. In 2007, he represented Wales at the Venice Biennale. He was one of the five artists shortlisted for the Angel of the South project in January 2008.

White Wine Press is a series of texts, one hundred being the goal, as an open project that seeks to wander a world. We are looking simply for those voices that have an urgency of saying. The artists are free to write about any subject, preferably about something outside the overwhelmingly present frames of their own work, or at least to come at the same in tangential fashion. In other words: state an interest.

The texts will be published in the original language and in an English translation. If the texts are written in English, they will be accompanied by a Spanish translation and thus cover two large linguistic areas. Our basic animal condition, as Charles Olson put it, is move/meant. We are now in movement and thank the artists for providing state/meant. There is no story that is not true.
